Disney has announced their second live-action television series will be centered around Cassian Andor and developed exclusively for their new streaming service. During a conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that their streaming service is officially called Disney+. He also highlighted the new Star Wars project and explained that the series will be a prequel to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor. The series is currently without a name or release date.

Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced today that Lucasfilm is in development on a second Star Wars live-action series for Disney+, the Company’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service. The series, which will go into production next year, follows the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Andor. “Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”
The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire. A release date for the series has not yet been announced. Stay tuned to StarWars.com for the latest updates.
Production on the series will begin next year. Currently, the show does not have an official showrunner or creative team. As of now, there’s no word on Alan Tudyk returning as K-2SO.
Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios appear to be developing live-action series for the Disney+ platform in similar fashions. It’s unclear if scope of this series will be limited in nature, as is the case with the Marvel shows, or if it will run for multiple seasons.
This announcement shows Lucasfilm is willing to tell almost any story in the live-action format. It opens the door to the possibility of finishing the Solo: A Star Wars Story storyline on the streaming service or turning the much rumored Kenobi movie into a series. Disney seems to be sparing no expense for their streaming service and hopefully that means we’ll have much more Star Wars content on the way.
