Farewell to the Lucas Experience

Then, the unthinkable happened: on October 30th, 2012, Lucas sold everything he owned in regards to his film company to Disney. Lucasfilm, Lucasarts, ILM, and Skywalker Sound. The Empire he built up over the course of more than 30 years was passed on to a corporation that already has become a monopolizing force. Lucas was retiring, leaving Kathleen Kennedy in charge only to sell his entire career to Disney for an ungodly amount of money! It came as a complete shock to me, so… unexpected. It was never hinted at; it was never indicated. We all knew George would be retiring, but this?! I just do not, in any way, see the reason for it. It truly does mark the end of an era. Disney has announced that the long-demanded sequels would finally get made, in no time at all. But without George, it’s not the same. He’s not doing it, he’s not writing them, he’s not producing them, the franchise is no longer his. The mark he left on it is gone, whatever product Disney attempts to make with the Wars isn’t my Star Wars . At this point, it’s going to become overkill. I am at a complete loss for words.

Six films are enough. They told the story of some of the greatest chararacters ever, and probably the greatest villain ever.

Now we’re gonna have 9, and possibly more. The EU that fans have spent so many hours reading, so much money invested in over the years, are now going to be affected by this development. Some of us were dead fine with the films being over and done with. That’s what we were told, that’s what were got accustomed to because we had so much other material. But now Disney is going to run wild with it. We won’t have the original cast, the original crew; the Lucas entourage is gone.

All this time I thought he saw his creation as his child, his very own baby. But in the end I guess it was just a product that he wanted to be rid of. He’s retiring; he grew tired of all the fan hate he got from several things on Star Wars lore, so he gave it to someone else to deal with. He’s a smart man, so I’m sure he knew what he was doing. But at the same time I’m very hurt by this announcement, and sad to see this man–this hero–gone from his own business. The legacy that is Star Wars won’t be same for me, and the coming generations won’t have the same appeal either. But when George wants to quit, he wants to quit. Basically, it’s in God’s hands now. It’ll take a long time for me to come to terms with this decision and a large part of me is gone now.

The era of Star Wars , the Saga Lucas created, the Saga where the magic really happened, is over. Thank you George, thank you for everything. I don’t care what kind of changes you made to the Blu-Rays, they were still yours, and yours alone. You created films that no one else can replicate. You inspired so many people (including myself) to pursue their true talents and interests. You opened the world up, George. We will miss you. Star Wars is George Lucas, and George Lucas is Star Wars .

Disney has a lot of expectations that they can’t meet, in my opinion.

But hey, at least the money he got for his life’s work is going to charity…
