StarWars.Com Review: Emptypedia

Posted Image Link to Entry Bam. Yer done, son.

Note the link at the bottom of the entry that says “More on Wookieepedia”. I actually have to applaud this move. Ok, yes, if you happen to be among the few that remember The Dark Moose embroiled in some minor controversies in the past regarding criticism of said fan site, I’d like you to know that those days are behind me. Completely independent of my previous negativity and for reasons of their own, Wookieepedia has evolved into a rather professional site obsessed more with fact than opinion and editorial . It’s a labor of love for the fans that make it, and I think it’s fully matured. That’s what StarWars.com is saying with a nod there at the bottom. Wookieepedia has more useful information on the topics you want to find than they do. And hell, Wookieepedians actually want to keep up with the changing facts. So let them carry the burden of providing minutia to the masses.

But I conditionally applaud that. If this is StarWars.com throwing in the towel on being the “official” source of all things Star Wars , and focusing more on announcements of events and new media, then I get it. If this is StarWars.com saying that they don’t care anymore about this sort of trivia, then I don’t get it.

I suspect it’s a bit of both. But as is, it’s a marriage that works, and at least there is place to get the content. But here’s the real issue for me. It’s all gone from the site. StarWars.com doesn’t leave all of the wonderful old articles in place and then link off to WP for more detail. They’ve dramatically cut down the amount of content. The old articles are gone. There is a fraction of the information once available in the Databank that they made into a ghostly version of its former self when they renamed it the Encyclopedia. To be fair, though, they do offer some added functionality not seen in the old Databank, found in the Video/Images tab. It’s nice, but I still prefer to see more.
