We saw a trailer for the first time. 90 seconds of euphoria. I remember the day well. It was Black Friday, but instead of shoving crazed shoppers out of my way to get some super cheap seasons of Fringe at Target I was at work. But my mind wasn’t on all I had to do, it was in the stars. I knew this trailer was coming. It was all I could think about. When it dropped, I watched over and over huddled like a penguin next to one co-worker after another. My eyes were glued to my computer screen. Instead of work, I went through the trailer frame by frame, arguing with someone about that strange droid’s soccer-ball-like shape.
That strange droid.
We didn’t know the name BB-8. We didn’t know Rey or Finn or Poe or Kylo. All we had were our eyes. We just knew there was a girl on a speeder. A confused “stormtrooper” (or is he in disguise?? We wondered). A pilot who’s enthusiasm matched ours. And that a cloaked fellow had the most awesome- most stupid? – lightsaber design of all time (and the internet debates began!)
In short, we knew nothing. We were still using the seating arrangement of the table read cast photo for speculation! Looking over every detail. It wouldn’t be until December until we got names! The simplest detail of character names.
Just take a look at the speculation on this very site on the day the trailer dropped. So many theories that are gone now, so many questions that still linger.
And now here we are. Footage, toys, vague lines of dialog, novels, comics, leaks, and even information on the films that follow! Our eyes couldn’t believe what they were seeing. But JJ and company… they know our eyes. They know what we’d see and what we’d think. No doubt what we saw in that teaser and what we’ve seen since will fit into a grand scheme that we only think we can understand. Everything has been released in a way that builds on the trailer or spot before it. But we’re just under 3 weeks away from seeing everything.
